A trip to Vietnam requires careful preparation, despite the good infrastructure.
Based on our own travel experiences and the current legal framework, here are the key points you should check before you set off.

1. Check visa and entry requirements
The current rules for German citizens are as follows:
- Visa-free entry for stays of up to 45 days
- An e-visa is required for longer stays
- Your passport must be valid for at least another 6 months upon entry
Regulations are subject to change. We strongly recommend checking official government websites before departure.
2. Observe import regulations (e-cigarettes, vapes, etc.)
Vietnam has tightened regulations on e-cigarettes in recent years.
Importing these items can be problematic and may result in confiscation or fines.
It is essential to check the current legal situation before departure.
3. Check your credit card in good time
Vietnam is becoming increasingly digital, yet cash remains important.
Recommendations before you travel:
- Check with your bank whether international transactions are enabled
- Check whether geo-blocking is disabled
- Prefer to use a Visa card (more widely accepted in rural areas)
- Test the PIN function and online authorisation
Many travellers report that standard German bank cards (e.g. from savings banks or regional banks) occasionally cause problems at Vietnamese cash machines.
4. Define a cash strategy
You should clarify the following in advance:
- Should I exchange money in before i leave?
- Do I collect it from the machine on site?
- Do I mainly pay by credit card?
Experience has shown that:
- Exchanging money in Germany (e.g. at a Reisebank) is often less favourable
- Some airport ticket machines charge higher fees
- In Vietnam, many ATMs charge fees of between 20,000 and 50,000 VND
Important:
When paying by card or withdrawing cash, always ask for the transaction to be processed in the local currency (VND) and do not accept automatic conversion to euros (avoid dynamic currency conversion).
5. Exchange money only at authorised outlets
Foreign currency may only be used in:
- Bank Companies
- officially licensed bureaux de change
- authorised gold shops
can be exchanged.
Swapping roads is illegal and risky.
This is a new rule introduced in 2026
6. Allow time for flight selection and immigration
Direct flights from Frankfurt or Munich to Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City (e.g. with Vietnam Airlines) are comfortable and save time.
Important:
Immigration checks may be very busy.
A ‘fast track’ service (which can sometimes be booked through airlines) can significantly reduce waiting times.
7. Set up your SIM card or eSIM
Options:
- Book an eSIM in advance
- Buy a SIM card at the airport
- Buy a SIM card from official shops in the city
Important:
Registration must be done officially (your passport will be registered).
Unlimited data plans are usually only worth it for longer stays.
SIM cards are usually more expensive at the airport than in shops in Vietnam.
Please ensure you select the correct network (Viettel or Vinaphone)
8. Arrange your airport transfer in advance
Recommended
- Book the hotel shuttle in advance
- Or use the Grab app
Not recommended:
Approaching drivers outside the official app or taxi rank directly → often leads to overcharging.
9. Plan your luggage realistically
Vietnam offers affordable clothing, made-to-measure items and souvenirs.
It might be a good idea:
- to take less clothing
- Make sure to leave space in your suitcase for the return journey
10. Organising your travel plans
Vietnam has a very varied climate:
- Northern, Central and Southern Vietnam have different rainy seasons
- Regional planning is crucial
A well-planned route saves time, money and unnecessary transfers.
11. New from 1 July 2026 – Health declaration now mandatory!
From 1 July 2026, all travellers to Vietnam must complete an official health declaration form before entering the country.
The most important thing:
• Mandatory from 1 July 2026
• Must be completed within 7 days prior to entry
• Available online or on paper
• No proof of vaccination required

12. Digital Arrival Card HCM City
New from 15 April 2026 – Digital entry card for Ho Chi Minh City!
Anyone arriving via Tan Son Nhat Airport in Ho Chi Minh City must complete a digital entry card in advance and will receive a QR code by email.
The most important thing:
• Mandatory from 15 April 2026 – Tan Son Nhat Airport, Ho Chi Minh City only
• Must be completed within 72 hours of arrival
• Completely free of charge
• You will receive a QR code by email – be sure to save it!
• This does not replace your visa – you need both!
• Expansion to Hanoi and Da Nang planned – please check before travelling!
