Vietnam’s hidden gems – special places off the beaten track

Vietnam has much more to offer than just the well-known stops on standard tours. Off the beaten track, there are places (hidden gems) that even many seasoned travellers to Vietnam are unaware of – stunning natural settings, tranquil coastal areas and landscapes with a unique atmosphere.

These hidden gems are ideal for travellers who want to experience Vietnam in a more personalised way. The following places can be easily incorporated into a tailor-made itinerary.

🌊 1. Infinity Sea – Thái Thụy (Northern Vietnam)

📍 Thái Bình Province

about 3 hours from Hanoi

In the coastal region of Thái Thụy in Thái Bình Province, extraordinary water landscapes emerge at certain tides. Shallow mudflats and mirror-like surfaces create the impression of an endless horizon, depending on the angle from which they are viewed – hence the unofficial name ‘Infinity Sea’.

The village attracts very few tourists and is particularly suited to travellers looking for nature and photo spots off the beaten track.

💎 2. Infinity Lake – near Da Lat

📍 close to Da Lat

about 15 km from the centre

Note:

The spot is often referred to locally as Hồ Vô Cực.

Infinity Lake near Da Lat – known locally as “Hồ Vô Cực” – is nestled in the rolling highland landscape. Depending on the light, its calm surface creates an impressive sense of vastness.

The spot is particularly atmospheric at sunrise and fits well into a route through the central highlands.

🏔 3. Pu Luong Nature Reserve

📍 Pu Luong Nature Reserve

about 4 hours from Hanoi

Pu Luong is considered a quieter alternative to Sapa. Gentle rice terraces, small villages and authentic encounters with local ethnic minorities characterise the region.

Small eco-lodges offer accommodation with sweeping views over the terraced fields – ideal for travellers seeking nature away from the crowds.

🌿 Da Lat – Highlands & Nature Region

The area around Da Lat in the central highlands of Vietnam are markedly different from the tropical coastal and delta regions. Pine forests, waterfalls and coffee plantations characterise the landscape and ensure a pleasantly cooler climate.

As well as well-known attractions, there are numerous smaller natural spots, viewpoints and lakes that are ideal for individual day trips. The region is particularly well suited to travellers who appreciate nature, wide open spaces and a peaceful atmosphere.

🏔️ Bà Đen Mountain – South Vietnam’s highest mountain

Bà Đen Mountain in Tây Ninh Province is the highest mountain in southern Vietnam, standing at around 986 metres. From the summit, there is a sweeping view of the surrounding countryside all the way to the Cambodian border.

The mountain can be reached both by cable car and via hiking trails and is ideal for a day trip from Ho Chi Minh City . Particularly when combined with a tailor-made itinerary through South Vietnam, it makes for a visually stunning addition to the trip.
